Salt Lake City's grid begins at Main and South Temple

Salt Lake City addresses often behave like coordinates. Salt Lake County’s grid begins at Main Street and South Temple, and the numbered and directional parts of an address show its position in relation to that origin.

The full address matters. It may include a number, a directional prefix, a street name or grid coordinate, a street type, a directional suffix, and a unit. Reading only the largest number can send you toward the right part of the valley while still missing the actual street or entrance.

The origin has an older meaning, too. The Salt Lake Base and Meridian monument near the southeast corner of Temple Square became the initial point for Utah’s early public-land surveys. That survey history helps explain why an origin point carries so much weight in the city’s geography.

The survey monument and the modern address grid are related, but they are not interchangeable. The monument does not make every Utah address part of the Salt Lake grid, and the grid does not identify a parcel, jurisdiction, building entrance, or drivable route by itself.

Use the grid to orient yourself, then open the current official address record and a live map for the destination. Keep every directional, street-type, and unit component when entering the address.
