Most personal vehicle and recreational classes use a published age table. Medium- and heavy-duty trucks, commercial trailers, and vessels 31 feet or longer use 1.5% of depreciated taxable value.

Ordinary passenger vehicle
The 2026 age table has five bands.

Example: a 2023 passenger car uses the $110 uniform age-based fee before the rest of the DMV transaction charges.
Official value-based example
A 34-foot boat uses MSRP, percent good, then 1.5%.

County and inspection branch
Five counties add a live emissions check.
Cache, Davis, Salt Lake, Utah, and Weber counties run emissions programs. The current DMV page breaks the answer down by county, model year, fuel or vehicle type, exemptions, and out-of-state procedure.
- An emissions test can be completed no more than two months before renewal, and the county must send the result electronically to DMV.
- Most vehicles no longer need a safety inspection as a registration prerequisite.
- Rebuilt salvage vehicles, first-time street-legal ATV registrations, commercial vehicles, and three-axle motor homes retain specific safety-inspection duties.
- An appeal of the official value used for the 1.5% fee goes to the county board of equalization within 30 days after the tax notice is mailed. An informal assessor review does not extend that deadline.
