Hardware WMA: the elk are part of the work

Hardware Wildlife Management Area has a public-facing past in its old name, Hardware Ranch. The current name tells more of the story. At the top of Blacksmith Fork Canyon, the same ground supports wildlife habitat, public access, and active herd work by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.

In winter, staff feed between 500 and 600 Rocky Mountain elk each day. About 300 tons of grass hay is grown on the WMA for that feeding. Staff also capture a sample of the herd to tag, weigh, and test the animals.

Those numbers describe management work, not a guarantee that elk will be in view on a particular day. The animals are wild, and their location changes with weather and movement through the surrounding country.

Self-directed recreation at the WMA is available year-round and admission is free. The Wildlife Education Center follows a narrower schedule: select days in fall, winter, and spring, with a summer closure. The WMA also has no fuel sales or cellular service.

Year-round access does not mean every building, restroom, road, campsite, ride, or program is available. Check DWR’s live visit page for weather, road conditions, facilities, camping seasons, and scheduled activities before entering the canyon.

Hardware works best as a wildlife place with a public window, not as a guaranteed attraction. The winter elk are visible evidence of habitat management, feeding, and field study already underway.
