Morgan City's river, railroad, and Interstate 84 corridor

Morgan City makes more sense when you read Commercial Street from the tracks outward. The historic district record begins with two settlements on opposite sides of the Weber River. Their street grids kept different alignments after incorporation, while a commercial and railroad district grew between them.

The railroad was completed through Morgan in 1868, the same year North and South Morgan incorporated as one city. Commercial Street became a one-sided business street facing the station and tracks. Interstate-system designation came in 1956, and the highway now called Interstate 84 follows the railroad route through Morgan City.

River, rail, and interstate are separate parts of the story, but the narrow passage keeps them close enough to read together. Walk or look along Commercial Street for the railroad-facing town form.
