Grand Staircase-Escalante from the Kanab doorway

Kanab is one practical doorway into a nearly 1.9-million-acre monument where the destination, permit, dated road report, and live conditions belong in the same plan.

Grand Staircase-Escalante is too large to treat as one stop. BLM’s current page describes a nearly 1.9-million-acre area in southern Utah with cliffs, canyons, plateaus, badlands, and remote wilderness. The name on the map covers many different outings.

Kanab is one of four monument visitor-center doorways, not the only gateway. The BLM center at 745 East Highway 89 can provide weather reports, hiking recommendations, and road reports. Its hours are seasonal, so check the live page before making it the first stop.

Free permits are required for overnight stays within the monument. Certain high-use areas use separate special-permit or lottery systems. Pick the destination before assuming the ordinary overnight permit is the whole plan.

As checked on July 28, 2026, the monument road-report page warned that updates would be less regular for a time. Its map is not real-time and serves only as a reference. Pair the dated report with a current forecast and a visitor-center check before choosing a remote road.
