Golden Spike at Promontory Summit
The Utah railroad site comes with two often-missed details: it is Promontory Summit, and the ceremonial spike itself is now in California.
Golden Spike National Historical Park marks Promontory Summit, where the Central Pacific and Union Pacific lines met. The first transcontinental railroad was completed there on May 10, 1869.
Two details matter. The ceremony happened at Promontory Summit, not Promontory Point. The ceremonial golden spike is in Palo Alto, California, after it was donated to Stanford University’s art museum in 1892. The Utah park preserves the place where the rails joined.
The park is 32 miles west of Brigham City, and the last-spike site is a short walk from the visitor center. The setting is remote, so check the forecast before the drive. In winter, contact the park for current road and weather conditions.
