San Rafael Swell motorized route check
A 2026 reassessment means old San Rafael Swell maps and mileage totals cannot settle whether a particular motorized route is open, limited, or closed.
For a motorized trip in the San Rafael Swell, the current route designation is the first check. Open BLM’s current ePlanning project, find the exact route, and read whether it is OHV-open, OHV-limited, or OHV-closed. Those are motorized-route designations, not blanket statements about every kind of access.
BLM completed updated travel planning in December 2024. During review on July 28, 2026, the older ePlanning link on the recreation-area page returned 404. Use the current ePlanning project rather than following an old bookmark without checking where it lands.
The live project also carries a May 5, 2026 announcement that certain routes then designated closed or limited are being reassessed. An interactive map identifies the routes under review. That active process means a saved 2024 map or mileage total cannot establish today’s status for a particular route.
Match the route name or number to the current project before leaving reliable service. Read any limitation attached to it, and check again near departure. A broad recreation map can help with orientation, but the current project record is the place to settle the motorized-route question.
