Utah story
Read Bountiful from Main Street toward the foothills
Bountiful's settlement names trace its early history, while the city's general plan distinguishes a walkable Main Street center from steep foothill neighborhoods.
Bountiful is easier to read as two connected landscapes: the older civic center around Main Street and residential ground rising toward the foothills. The city’s history explains the first; its adopted general plan gives useful language for the second.
Perrigrine Sessions settled with his family at the future city site in September 1847. The community was known first as Sessions’ Settlement and then North Canyon before adopting the name Bountiful in 1855.
The current general plan distinguishes a walkable Downtown place type centered on Main Street from Foothill Residential areas characterized by large lots, steep topography, and proximity to natural areas. That contrast makes the city’s form more legible without turning a broad place type into a property rule.
The plan is advisory. Its labels do not decide a parcel’s zoning, buildability, slope stability, wildfire exposure, access, or permit outcome, and “bench” is not a legal boundary.
Read the city history for the settlement-and-name sequence, then use the general plan to compare Downtown and Foothill Residential. For a property decision, bring the street address to Bountiful’s current zoning and permit resources instead of relying on the general-plan label alone.
Where to see it
Use Bountiful's current city history for the settlement sequence, then open Bountiful By Design and its linked adopted plan for the Downtown and Foothill Residential place types. Check current zoning separately for a specific property.
