Two gifts and Springville's Art City story

Springville’s Art City story begins with two works given to students. In 1903, Cyrus Dallin and John Hafen each donated an original artwork to Springville students.

The students kept building the collection and began the Spring Salon exhibition in the 1920s. That work helped create momentum for the Springville High School Art Gallery in the 1930s, now the Springville Museum of Art. The sequence matters: a school collection and recurring exhibition came before the museum became a civic institution.

The museum remains part of the city’s public stewardship. Springville calls its city-owned art and heritage objects the Springville City Collection. The city’s policy places the Museum Director with other city department leaders on the collections committee and assigns museum staff to maintain collection records.

The museum is at 126 East 400 South. Its current visit page lists free admission, with donations appreciated; Tuesday through Saturday hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Monday hours from 6 to 8 p.m.; and Wednesday hours through 8 p.m. It closes Sundays and holidays.
