Utah automatically gives an individual filer more time to file, not more time to pay. For a calendar-year 2025 return, the return and any tax due were due April 15, 2026. An extension return must be filed by October 15, 2026.
There is no separate Utah extension form to submit. The six-month filing extension is automatic. Tax left unpaid after the original due date can accrue interest from that date, and penalties may also apply, so waiting until October to file does not make an unpaid April balance timely.
The extension prepayment test has two ordinary benchmarks. By the original due date, the filer generally needs the lesser of 90 percent of the 2025 Utah tax liability or 100 percent of the 2024 Utah tax liability. Utah withholding, earlier prepayments, credit carryovers, and a prior-year refund applied to 2025 count toward that amount.
A first-year Utah filer, or a filer who had no 2024 Utah tax liability, does not use a zero prior-year amount to erase the prepayment requirement. That branch uses 90 percent of the 2025 Utah tax due. The actual calculation depends on the completed return, withholding, credits, and payment history.
TC-546 is a prepayment coupon, not an extension request. Its worksheet subtracts withholding and other listed payments from the required benchmark. If the result is zero, the instructions say not to send the coupon. If a payment is due, it can be made through Taxpayer Access Point or sent with TC-546 by the applicable due date.
If April 15 passed with tax still unpaid, file the return by October 15 rather than treating the extension as a payment pause. Use the current Tax Commission instructions for the tax year, make the payment through the official route, and keep the confirmation. Penalty and interest questions depend on the account and payment dates, so resolve those from the Tax Commission record or with qualified tax help instead of estimating them from a generic example.
Before filing, gather the completed federal return, draft Utah TC-40, 2024 Utah liability, 2025 withholding forms, carryovers, prior payments, and any refund applied forward. Calculate the prepayment test from those records, open the current official instructions, and save both the filed-return acknowledgment and every payment receipt.
