Utah wildfire home readiness: address to action
Check the Utah high-risk WUI and local code layers, follow the official lot-assessment categories, then keep restrictions, evacuation, and insurance live.
Utah HB 48 took effect January 1, 2026. FFSL creates the state high-risk WUI boundary, sets the program standards and fees, and maintains UWRAP; counties collect the program fee, while counties and cities define local WUI code areas and adopt or enforce the WUI code.
The state program centers on homeowner education, lot assessments, risk-based fees, defensible space, and home hardening. Exact boundary, fee, assessment availability, and administrative rules are live checks rather than values Utah Porch saves.
Durable preparation follows FFSL's official categories: a lot assessment, fire-resistant materials, defensible space, and maintenance of roofs, gutters, and landscape. Current incidents, restrictions, and evacuation direction belong to official live sources.
Guide details
Separate the state boundary from the local code map
The state high-risk WUI boundary is used for the HB 48 property program and insurance provisions described by FFSL. A county or municipality separately defines where its adopted WUI construction code applies.
Example: an address can require a high-risk-boundary check, a local WUI code question for a remodel, and a local fire-district contact. A state map result alone does not settle the building permit or response jurisdiction.
Work from the structure outward
Use the FFSL checklist categories: fire-resistant materials, defensible space, and maintenance of roofs, gutters, and landscape. Complete the mitigation actions specified by the official lot assessment rather than treating a generic list as the parcel plan.
Use the assessment's stated actions as the property-specific work list; this guide does not add construction details that the assessment did not identify.
Keep today's fire information outside the stable checklist
Utah Fire Info is the live state doorway for current incidents and restrictions. The county, municipality, sheriff, emergency manager, fire authority, or controlling land manager supplies the local alert, closure, evacuation, or return direction.
Do not turn a saved map or social post into current authority. Recheck restrictions before burning, fireworks, equipment use, or travel and follow an evacuation order immediately.
Read the policy, not a map promise
The Utah Insurance Department describes common policy categories for the home and other structures, personal property, and temporary living expenses. It also explains replacement-cost and actual-cash-value settlement approaches; the actual policy supplies its limits, exclusions, deductibles, conditions, and endorsements.
Review the policy every year and maintain the home inventory the Department recommends. A UWRAP or mitigation result does not state what the policy covers.
Official doorways
Continue with the controlling source
Keep these live sources bookmarked by address and jurisdiction. The risk portal, local code authority, incident system, and insurer answer different questions.
First moves
- 1
Check the exact address in UWRAP and ask the county or municipality whether a local WUI code area and permit rule apply.
- 2
Complete the official lot assessment, then follow its stated actions for fire-resistant materials, defensible space, roofs, gutters, and landscape.
- 3
Save the local alert signup, evacuation authority, Utah Fire Info, and controlling land-manager restriction page before fire season or travel.
- 4
Review the actual insurance policy and endorsements every year; keep a current home inventory.
Watch for
- The state high-risk boundary and a local WUI code map serve different purposes.
- An old fee, restriction, incident map, or evacuation post is not current authority.
- The official lot assessment, not a generic checklist, supplies the property-specific action list.
- A wildfire-risk or mitigation result does not state the policy's coverage, limits, exclusions, deductibles, or settlement terms.
